Easter – Emmaus Story – Hearts Uplifted

I have met many people who found this story really helped at times when they were down, when there were disappointments in life, when they encountered illness and many of the crosses of life. They believed in him after he had vanished, having broken the bread with them.  He had accompanied them in a dark journey of life.

Jesus went with them – he did not await their visit.  Somehow, he knew that people of his set were in darkness and maybe despair.  This is the call of the church – to be with us in prayer, community and service always, and especially for what Pope Francis calls, ‘the peripheries of life.’  Most of us spend some time there and appreciate the help of love and faith.

Then they went to tell the story of how they were changed.  Faith grows through sharing it.  A father said, ‘At my child’s first communion, my faith became stronger.’  They told their story of Jesus in the here and now, something reminiscing on what things were like in Galilee.  Every journey of life can be like an Emmaus journey where we meet the Lord.  Every altar can be the altar of Emmaus, and indeed every meal can be a time for friendship, care and nourishment for body and for soul.

In these challenging times, it is more important than ever to be mindful of your wellbeing and that of others. The Formation Program, and many other aspects of College life, provide insightful and practical measures to support student wellbeing. Mental, social and emotional factors are enhanced by positively connecting with others. Brigidine students have been encouraged to continue their social engagement with peers to remain connected.

Online Tools

There are many online tools that can be used effectively to build and maintain relationships whilst practicing physical distancing. The College’s Responsible Use of Technology Policy has a helpful ‘Advice for Parents’ section about expectations and safety related to use of devices. The College Student Planner (page 20) also provides information you can discuss with your daughter. Responsible use of technology is best taught in partnership between home and school. I would encourage all parents and guardians to frequently discuss and monitor the use of laptops and phones, to ensure safety and positive behaviours. College platforms such as Teams and SEQTA are to be used for learning purposes and should not be used for social communication between students.

Tips for successful online learning

As we move towards learning online at the beginning of Term Two here are a few things to improve student outcomes:

  1. Have a quiet space to work in… preferably not your bedroom. You might have an outdoor entertainment area where younger siblings (and possible the family dog) will not interrupt you, or a second living area away from the noise of the rest of the family.
  2. Plan to work on Mathematics at the timetabled times each week. The structure should encourage you to focus on the necessary tasks.
  3. Turn off social media (and online games). You may think you are wonderful at multi-tasking but Mathematics requires your full attention.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask – we are here to help you. That’s our job. It is likely teachers will greet you online, mark a roll and then either teach online or ask you to watch a video clip of them explaining a concept or a suitable YouTube clip. Follow the teacher instructions but ask them questions any time you need help.
  5. Don’t put work off and think you will catch up at a later date – this is a recipe for stress, anxiety and falling behind. Mathematics needs to be worked on regularly to learn and retain new knowledge and skills.

Academic Ambassadors

This year has kicked off with a bit of an unusual start. Year 12 started to complete their IA2s (Internal Assessment 2) this term whilst other students commenced their first assessments for the year. Unfortunately, many exams were postponed or cancelled due to the current pandemic. We would like to thank our amazing teachers whose efforts to remain flexible during this time of unrest has ensured that students are on track with their work.  Their persistence and dedication to making this process as easy as possible for students has not gone unnoticed.

We’d like to remind everyone to keep checking the Brigidine College App for updates on how our school is responding and managing the situation. Students, please check SEQTA and Outlook regularly for messages about classwork and assessments for Term 2.

Arts Wrap Up

This term was an exciting new era for the Arts at Brigidine with many new initiatives, programming, staff and students. On staff, we again welcomed Melissa Armsden teaching Dance and Lisa Kelly Crawford taking charge of Year 7 Performing Arts.

Year 12 students jumped into their final year by painting, drawing, singing, spinning and acting. All students worked to develop skills in composing, choreographing and conceptually developing their ideas. These works have been showcased through their final assessment items in compositions, choreography, dramatic concepts and artworks.

Year 9 Drama students were given the opportunity to adapt a popular children’s picture book The All New, Must have, Orange 430 into a theatrical performance for the students of Holy Family Primary School.  Even though their audience was unable to join them due to social distancing guidelines, our girls’ performance was filled with much excitement, song and dance. Each drama students demonstrated a clear knowledge of the conventions of children’s theatre.

On the back of the recent Australian bushfire crisis & ongoing drought, Year 11 Drama students performed a contemporary dance piece which was set to music soundscapes and excerpts from one of Greta Thunberg’s popularised speeches.  The girls performed with great precision & palpable conviction.

In the Arts Department, as we move into Term 2 we are excited about the potential of home learning. Remember, tapping into creative behaviours can improve self-expression, brain function, and mental and physical health.
